100 years ago, 1913
A spring housecleaning, such as the place has not undergone for some time, is taking place at the Lewiston lock-up. Complaints have been made that the lock-up was in an unsanitary condition and it is said that some of the prisoners have rebelled bitterly about conditions which they found in the cells. Special attention will be paid to the woman’s cell and the padded cell.

50 years ago, 1963
Lewiston Ward Six Alderman Paul A. Couture last night called on municipal department heads to place city-owned vehicles under strict supervision allowing no after-hours use by department personnel. Couture said, “I would like to remind the taxpayers that there are more than six vehicles used by city employees which are under their custody 2s4 hours a day.” He said that limits would save the city a great deal of money on repairs, gas and oil.

25 years ago, 1988
The Androscoggin River has risen four feet in the last six days and local emergency officials are continuing to monitor the water level in case rainy weather makes flooding possible. “We’re not anticipating a flood but we’re keeping a very close watch on the river conditions, said Peter V. Gagnon, director of the Androscoggin County Emergency Management Agency. “Right now we’re experiencing runoff conditions. “Right now we are just about normal. On March 30 the river level was at 5.5 feet. The Androscoggin River reaches flood stage at 13 feet.
