MONMOUTH — The Monmouth Academy Decathlon Team, coached by Cathy Foyt and Scott Foyt, competed in the State Academic Decathlon Championship at Deering High School on March 2.

Ten schools and 130 students participated. Monmouth finished as the State of Maine Super Quiz Champions and the State of Maine Runner-up School. Monmouth has earned the honor of competing in the National Academic Championship this April 25 and 26 in Minneapolis.

The top five schools in this year’s State Academic Decathlon Championship were the following: first, Scarborough High School; second, Monmouth Academy (Super Quiz Champions); third, Oak Hill High School; fourth, Portland High School; and fifth, Calais High School.

In the past 15 years, the Monmouth Academy Decathlon Team has placed as either the State Champions or the State Runner-Up Team. Three times in the last 14 years, the Monmouth Team has represented the state in the National Academic Decathlon Championships: 1999, California, fifth; 2002, Arizona, sixth; and 2004, Idaho, fifth.

Academic Decathlon is comprised of A, B, and C students who study together as a team for a year and then compete in 10 different categories: Art, economics, essay, interview, language/literature, mathematics, music, science, social science and speech. The super quiz changes yearly; for example, last year’s topic was the Age of Imperialism, this year’s topic is Russia, and next year’s topic will be World War I.
