DIXFIELD — Dirigo High School’s top two students in the 80-member Class of 2013 have set high career goals for themselves.
Valedictorian Ryanne Dailey, 17, of Carthage plans to go into chemical or biomedical engineering. She is the daughter of Kim and Mary Dailey.
Salutatorian Adelaide “Addy” Fuller, also 17, aims to become a choral director. She is the daughter of Don and Kim Fuller of Peru.
The young women are about one point apart in their GPAs.
Both attribute their high grades to hard work, always doing their homework, and staying busy and organized. And both have taken AP classes or college courses while still in high school.
“I love math and science,” Ryanne said. “There’s one answer to a problem that you are given. In engineering, there are multiple ways of getting an answer. I want to research or design better products.”
Addy attributes much of her love for music to her parents, who are huge Beatles fans. She also likes the team aspect of choral music.
“It’s almost like a sport. Everyone has to work together,” she said.
Addy has participated in talent shows since elementary school, performed in musicals and plays the violin.
“Both my parents are teachers. That has fostered my love of learning,” she said.
Ryanne is excited about being chosen as one of only two high school students in the state to attend the monthlong National Youth Science Camp in West Virginia at the end of June.
“We’ll hear from professors and scientists, go hiking and camping, and visit Washington, D.C.,” she said.
As her community service requirement at Dirigo, Ryanne has worked in the school’s office and helped out at the Dixfield Congregational Church vacation Bible school.
She plays tennis, enjoys Alpine skiing and loves to read historical fiction for the perspectives on how things were then and are now.
Ryanne is vice president of the National Honor Society, a member of the tennis and field hockey teams and the Rotary’s Interact Club, and takes tap and jazz dance classes.
“Hard work and determination pay off at the end,” she said.
She’s not sure yet what her speaking topic will be at the June 7 graduation.
Addy is president of the National Honor Society, and a member of the soccer, cross-country skiing and tennis teams. She is also a school representative on the RSU 10 board, which she said really listens to her questions and opinions.
Her community service requirement was filled by clearing trails at Black Mountain and volunteering during national ski meets.
“I feel like I’ve worked really hard in very competitive classes. I feel honored,” Addy said.
She said students would enjoy their high school years more if they became involved in some of the many clubs that are offered and if they find something in every class that they could feel passionate about.
Addy said she will speak about growing up in a small town that she once did not appreciate but now does.
“When a local tragedy happened, the community came together. It showed me the beauty of a small town,” she said.
Addy plans to major in music/vocal performance at Hamilton College in New York.
Ryanne has been accepted at two technology institutes and two colleges but has not yet decided which one to attend.
