FARMINGTON – Maine author Monica Wood will read excerpts from her award-winning memoir “When We Were the Kennedys” at 7:30 p.m. April 11 at the University of Maine at Farmington.

Wood’s reading is part of UMF’s monthly Visiting Writers Series, a program sponsored by the school’s creative writing program that invites renowned authors to read to an audience of students, professors and residents, and answer questions afterward.

According to a press release, the reading will be free and open to the public. Following the reading, Wood will sign copies of her books.

Wood’s most recent book, “When We Were the Kennedys: A Memoir from Mexico, Maine,” won the 2012 May Sarton Memoir Award for best woman’s memoir published in U.S. and Canada. It was the runner-up for the 2012 New England Book Festival Award in the autobiography category. It was also on Oprah’s Magazine summer-reading list and was a New England Booksellers Association bestseller.

Wood’s other work includes “Secret Language,” “My Only Story,” “Ernie’s Ark,” and “Any Bitter Thing.” She also write books to assist teachers and writers, such as “Short Takes,” “12 Multicultural Novels: A Reading and Teaching Guide,” “Critical Reading Activities for the Works of S.E. Hinton,” “Description,” and “The Pocket Muse, Vols. 1 and 2.”

Wood lives in Portland where she writes in a studio that her husband built for her in their backyard.
