FARMINGTON — The Farmington Recreation Department is now taking registrations for any Farmington area students in grades seven and eight who want to take part in a Middle School pickleball program.

The deadline for registering is 5 p.m. Friday, April 26, and the program is limited to the first 12 to register.

Participants will meet from 2:30 to 4:30 p.m. on Tuesdays and Thursdays at the Community Center, starting April 30 and continuing until May 16.

Pickleball is a cross between tennis, pingpong and badminton.

Players will learn and practice basic strokes, as well as gain understanding of the rules and scoring associated with the game. Through a variety of fundamental drills, children will be taught the proper method for hitting forehand, backhand and serves. As the players progress, each will play matches against others of similar ability.

The Recreation Department will provide all of the equipment needed.

The program director is Aimee Clarrage, who has worked for the Recreation Department for the past three years in several capacities while attending UMF. She also successfully ran an indoor pickleball program this winter and spring.

The standard registration fee is $ 15, paid paid by check to Aimee Clarrage. There is a $ 5 fee for participants who do not reside in Farmington, West Farmington, Farmington Falls or Fairbanks or whose parents do not pay property taxes to the town of Farmington.
