Free public supper April 13

LITCHFIELD — A free, public community supper will be held from 4:30 to 6 p.m. Saturday, April 13, at the Litchfield Community Christian Church. The menu will include baked beans, American chop suey and homemade desserts. Everyone is welcome.

Pleasant Hill Cemetery meeting

SABATTUS — Pleasant Hill Cemetery Association will have the annual business meeting and election of officers and trustees Saturday, April 13, beginning at 9 a.m. at the Sabattus Town Office, 190 Middle Road.

Vets monument unveiling nears

LEWISTON — The unveiling of the 25th monument will take place following the Memorial Day parade Saturday, May 25, at Veterans Memorial Park.

There is room for 18 more names to complete this monument.

To have your name listed on a monument, you are required to have your DD214, an honorable discharge and be a Maine native. The cost is $35.

The L & A Council will decide on future monuments at their next meeting.

CNA evening course at SAD 52

TURNER — MSAD 52 Adult & Community Education will offer a new CNA evening course beginning Monday, April 29.

The course will run from 3:30 to 9 p.m. on Mondays and Fridays and will go into August. It is designed to provide the skills and experience to be a state-certified nursing assistant.

Temple preschool applications

AUBURN — Temple Shalom Preschool is accepting applications for 2013 Summer Kids Club for preschoolers ages 2 1/2 to 5 years. Children must be potty trained. Summer Kids Club will begin on June 18 with three two-week sessions to choose from, each will be held on Tuesday, Wednesday and Thursdays from 9 a.m. to 1 p.m.

Summer Kids Club is designed specifically for preschool age children. Each two week session will be theme based and will include fun arts and crafts, stories, lots of outdoor and water play. A packed lunch from home will be served and a light healthy snack will be provided.

Session A, June 18-27, is Bubbles Everywhere and Little Critters; Session B, July 16-25, is Beach Days and Crafts that Rock; Session C, Aug. 6-15, is The Great Outdoors and Ice Cream. The cost for each two-week session is $150; a 20 percent discount for siblings will be offered.

Poland’s road crew featured

POLAND —  Ruts in the “rud,” frost heaves, stuck vehicles and stranded motorists are stories to tell. Snow rollers and horse drawn equipment are memories. Potholes and Personalities is a program of pictures and stories that highlights some of the memories of the Poland road crew and its problem-solving techniques over the years.

The program, one of the monthly Person to Person series sponsored by Friends of Ricker Library, features Reginald “Bud” Jordan, a member of the Poland Public Works Department for 43 years, and Rose Aikman. It will be held on Sunday, April 14, in the community room of the library from 5:30 to 7:30 p.m. A potluck supper will precede the presentation. Guests should bring a casserole, salad or dessert.

All are invited to come and to share their stories too. Poland’s present-day town crew will be special guests.

Twomey memorial blood drive

AUBURN — The Twomey family and the American Red Cross are holding the third annual blood drive in memory of C.J. Twomey from 11 a.m. to 4 p.m. Monday, April 15, at the Lost Valley Ski Resort, 200 Lost Valley Road.

C.J. Twomey was a graduate of Edward Little High School and a former airman in the United States Air Force. C.J. passed away unexpectedly on April 15, 2010. After his death, his parents made the decision to donate his organs with the hope of helping others. In a continued effort to make a difference in people’s lives and as a way to mark the anniversary of his passing, C.J’s family has chosen to hold a memorial blood drive again this year. It is their hope that community members will attend this event and give the gift of life in memory of C.J.

Interactive books to be displayed

POLAND — Ricker Memorial Library will offer a terrific display of pop-up art, shape books and interactive books with turning wheels or pull-out flaps, as well as books with puzzles to solve and word searches. This exhibit will be open from April 15-30. The hours are specific, so call the library at 998-4390 to find the best times for you. The library is on Route 26.

Paper engineers Robert Sabuda, Ray Marshall and David Carter will we well represented among this varied collection. Parents and grandparents are encouraged to bring their children and grandchildren to enjoy these old and new books together.

Disabled American Veterans meeting

LEWISTON — Disabled American Veterans will meet at 5:30 p.m. Tuesday, April 16, at the Lewiston Armory. The group will meet the third Tuesday of each month.

St. Ann Sodality membership

LEWISTON — The Ladies of St. Ann Sodality of Holy Family, Prince of Peace Parish will hold their general membership meeting at 6:30 p.m. Wednesday, April 17, in the parish hall.

After a short business meeting, there will be an election of officers. Entertainment is by Lorraine Ouellette and refreshments will be served.

Breast cancer exercise program

LEWISTON — The Patrick Dempsey Center for Cancer Hope & Healing is offering a free exercise program for breast cancer patients and survivors. YWCA Encore: A Breast Cancer Exercise Program will take place Thursdays, April 25 through May 30 from 5 to 5:30 p.m. at the Lewiston YWCA, 130 East Ave.

YWCA encore is a six-week program designed specifically for those who have experienced breast cancer. The program helps relieve discomfort and restore mobility, flexibility and confidence through gentle warm water exercise. The program is led by Judy Emch, certified American Red Cross and Encore instructor. Free access to the YWCA pool and take home exercises provided. Registration limited to 10 participants per session.

Beginner’s bicycle rides

LEWISTON — The Maine Cycling Club has developed a series of supported rides for beginner’s to learn (or relearn) safe road riding techniques.

Rides will begin April 18 and will be held every Thursday thereafter throughout the spring and summer. Rides are 45-60 minutes in length and will be held to a comfortable pace. Rides start at 6 p.m., leaving from the Bates College/Russell Street parking lot, near the outdoor track.

MCC club members will serve as ride leaders and will demonstrate safe group road riding techniques.

Families are welcome? children under 14 must be accompanied by a parent.

There is no cost to participate and it is not necessary to be a member of the Maine Cycling Club to ride. However, nonmembers must sign a waiver of liability form.

All riders must wear a helmet. All types of bikes are welcomed.

N.G. Historical Society meeting

NEW GLOUCESTER — The monthly meeting of the New Gloucester Historical Society will be held at 7 p.m. Thursday, April 18, at the New Gloucester Meetinghouse, 389 Intervale Road, Route 231, next to the Town Hall.

The speaker will be Roland Jordan, Maine Old Cemetery Association, who will talk about the association’s many projects highlighting the work done with Revolutionary War veterans, in honor of Patriots’ Day. The program is free and the public is invited.

Quilt, fiber arts show is April 20

MONMOUTH — Monmouth Museum and the United Church of Monmouth will host a Spring Quilt and Fiber Arts Show from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. Saturday, April 20, at the Monmouth Center Church and Packard Activity Center, 778 Main St. Admission is free.

Antique quilts from Monmouth Museum will be on display. Antique quilts, Underground Railroad quilts, new quilts, fiber arts, rugs, crewel/wool work, dolls and doll clothes, and all manner of handiwork will be in the Sanctuary.

Downstairs offerings are lunch, a raffle table, bake sale, vendors, books, fabric from charms to yardage, a quilt raffle and magazines will be on sale as well as tables for six local vendors.

There will be door prizes every half hour and ongoing demonstrations of sewing techniques. All proceeds benefit UCM and MM.
