An environmental group’s claims that the ash landfill and incinerator are directly responsible for health problems and should be shut down are ridiculous, city officials said Monday. “I think it’s absurd,” Auburn City Manager Paula R. Valente said of the demand and the group’s claims. The city’s incinerator and landfill and Sterling Engineered Products Inc. were all named in the Maine People’s Alliance list of “Terrible Ten” polluters, but the group’s methods are dubious, officials said. During a press conference at the entrance road to the landfill, members of the coalition gathered around posters and made brief speeches before reporters and a photographer.
