AUBURN — Charles W. Plummer, widely known for his presentations on the Civil War, will be the featured speaker at the Auburn Public Library from 2 to 4 p.m. Tuesday, April 30.

His presentation is being sponsored by L.A. Senior College as part of its community outreach program in partnership with the library.

Because this year marks the 150th anniversary of the Battle of Gettysburg, Plummer’s presentation will focus on that battle, the regiments from Maine that fought there and the volunteers from Auburn who served with some of those regiments.

He will give a brief overview of the events that led to that battle followed by a description of the fighting that took place on July 1-3, 1863. His presentation will also feature a series of visuals in the form of overhead transparencies that include battlefield maps and scenes of the aftermath of the three days of fighting that resulted in 23,003 Union casualties and 20,451 Confederate casualties.

Plummer will conclude his presentation with an assessment of how important winning that battle was to the Union’s war efforts to defeat the Confederate States of America and achieve President Lincoln’s goal to preserve the Union.
