NORWAY — Stone Smart American Legion Auxiliary Unit 82 will hold the National Presidents Scholarship Essay Contest for fifth and sixth graders at Guy E. Rowe School.

The winner will be invited to read their essay in April. The winner will receive $50 and the unit will send $50 to National Presidents Essay Scholarship.

The unit is holding a raffle to benefit Beals House at Togus, as they are in need of financial help.

The unit voted to send three girls to Girls State.

The Nominating Committee for officers for the coming year includes Joyce Clifford, Rose Moulton and Marjy Sessions.

Peggy Turner presented a flag to the unit. Her grandson, who is serving in Afghanistan as a pilot, sent the flag that had been on his helicopter. President Thelma Denlinger’s project is to send boxes of goodies and personal items to him to share with his buddies. The flag and plaque are now on the wall at the post.

Donations were made to Chaplain of Four Chaplains, to Bangor troop greeters, Seniors Plus Meals on Wheels, Community Lunch, Opportunity Farm, Special Olympics, Blind Camp and oil assistance for post members.

Unit members will assist the post with bingo on Sundays.

Poppy Day will be held May 10 in front of the Post Office, Main Street, and at Norway Lake Store. Rain date will be May 11.

New officers for the coming year are Kathy Neary, president; Marie Pingree, first vice-president; Barbara Henley, second vice-president; Diane Polvinen, secretary; Rose Moulton, treasurer; Marcy Dullea, chaplain; Thelma Denlinger, historian; Lillian Herrick, sgt. at arms; Bulah Ayer, Eleanor Durant, Marjy Sessions, executive committee.
