BETHEL — The Western Mountains Senior College, Telstar Middle School’s ArtReach program and the Bethel Senior Citizens group will be hosting a public event from 3 to 5 p.m. May 2 in the Telstar High School cafeteria called “Bridging the Generations,” an intergenerational project featuring drama, music and technology presentations, among other projects.

Nancy Davis, President of the Western Mountains Senior College, said that WMSC will be sponsoring the event as a “public celebration of the college’s 10th anniversary.” The event is free of charge.

“We held a ‘members only’ dinner in the fall, but we wanted to hold a public event to celebrate our anniversary,” Davis said. “We began planning something several months ago, and we ended up meeting up with Melissa Prescott, an art teacher at Telstar, who is superb at doing things like this.”

Davis explained that every year, Prescott’s Advanced Art Class at Telstar Middle School selects a service learning project to work on throughout the year. According to Prescott’s website, “this year, the students chose to help and work with seniors in our area.”

“For us, this was an easy collaboration,” Davis said. “We’ve done projects in the past with Mrs. Prescott’s students, and she’s worked with the college’s art class to do collaborative art projects, too.”

Davis said that seniors involved with the Western Mountains Senior College and the Senior Citizens group of Bethel have been meeting up with students from Telstar Middle School to “collaborate on projects in art, creative writing and cooking.”

“The middle school and high school students have planned out the food that will be served at the event, and they’ll work with the seniors to cook the food a week earlier,” Davis said.

Among the other groups that will be contributing to the event are the Local Food Connection and the Mahoosuc Land Trust.

“The Local Food Connection will be doing a presentation on how to order food locally online,” Davis said. “There will also be a mini-band performing music for those who attend.”
