LEWISTON — Senior Caroline Gattuso faced the minimum 15 batters in what is believed to be the first perfect game in Bates softball history, as the Bobcats swept Fisher College 8-0 and 9-0 in a pair of five-inning games on Tuesday.
Bates raised its record to 9-14, while Fisher sank to 2-23.
Gattuso, of North Reading, Mass., struck out eight Falcons, and sent four groundouts and three fly balls to an errorless Bates defense in Game 1. The last three batters in Fisher’s order were all limited to a single plate appearance. Gattuso now has 187 career strikeouts, one shy of Bates’ career record set by Becki Gasior.
The Bobcats had five hits and took advantage of four Fisher errors. The game ended on the eight-run rule in the bottom of the fifth, when ball four to junior Alayna Garbarino sailed past the Fisher catcher, allowing senior AnnaMarie Martino to come home from third base for the game-ending run.
Sophomore Kelsey Freedman provided the game’s big hit in the third inning, a three-run line drive that whistled over the fence in left-center field, her first career home run.
Senior Mary Lewis bunt-singled her way to going 2-for-3 in both games, raising her batting average to .474. Lewis also stole four bases to bring her Bates-record career total to 52. With her steal of second base in the third, she also set Bates’ single-season steals record with No. 20, breaking the former record of 19 set by Krissie Whiting ’03 in 2002.
Bates’ four-run fifth inning was started by a one-out, hit-by-pitch to sophomore Molly Brown, who was 2-for-4 on the day with two runs and an RBI. Freedman followed with a single to center field. Three Fisher errors and two wild pitches allowed Brown, Freedman, Gattuso and Martino to all circle the bases until the game ended with two outs on Martino’s run.
