1914 – 2013

FARMINGTON — Frances Luger Hoar, 99, of Farmington, died Wednesday, April 24, at Franklin Memorial Hospital, surrounded by her loving family.

The eldest child of Charles and Marie Link Luger, Frances was born on March 20, 1914, in New Rochelle, N.Y. When she was a young child, she moved with her family to West Farmington. Frances graduated from Farmington High School and Bliss Business School.

In 1935, she married Allison G. Hoar, and they operated a dairy farm for many years. Their three children, Philip, Ronald and Jacquelyn, were raised there. The family enjoyed leisure time at “camp,” a cottage they built on Sand Pond. They later opened the Farm to You Roadside Market and sold their produce, jams and jellies.

Frances dearly loved her home and family and maintained a spectacular home flower garden. She loved sewing and quilting and was well known for her strawberry jam. She loved cooking with her grandchildren, even though it probably took twice as long. She also enjoyed wintering in Florida, where she was an avid bowler and participated in the Ka-Zoo Ka-Knockers of Harbor Lights Park.

Her busy life extended into the community. She served as president of Mt. Blue Area Garden Club, the State Women of Maine Extension Association and the Irene Luce Philathea Class at Henderson Memorial Baptist Church. She also was the trustee of the Franklin County 4-H and the Pine Tree 4-H State Foundation for Franklin County, and served as a 4-H Club leader and corporator of Franklin Savings Bank. Additional memberships included the West Farmington Literary Society Club of the Maine Federation and Village Improvement Society and the Farmington School Board. Special honors include being named Outstanding Alumnus by the Farmington Area Alumni Association and a 50-year honorary membership to the Maine State Grange Mothers Club. Frances was also the first woman in Franklin County to be named to the Farmers Home Administration Committee.

She is survived by her sister, Marie Brown; son, Philip Haines and his wife, Edith; daughter, Jackie Dennis; daughter-in-law, Pam Eisner; nine grandchildren, Calvin Haines, Gail Carson, Deborah Nicely, Philip D. Haines, Christina Deveau, Nathan Dennis, Sonya Hirsch, Darren Daniels and Tamara Zaler; 16 great-grandchildren; and one great-great-grandchild.

Frances was predeceased by her husband, Allison G. Hoar; son, Ronald Hoar; siblings, Charles, Philip, Edith, John and Robert; and a lifelong friend, “from 1926 to forever,” Dot Richmond.
