Mohamed Hassan, 13, and Sitey Muktar, 18, gather around the pizza-making table during a Lots to Gardens cooking contest at the Tree Street Youth Community Center in Lewiston on Friday. Muktar is one of four youths who organized a gathering to try new, healthy foods. Attendees made pizzas, salads and Thai bean wraps before voting on which ingredients were their favorites. Feedback from the event will be passed along to the food service director for the Lewiston School Department. “These are options that are not available for school lunches,” Tailor Brosious, a volunteer with Lots to Gardens, said. “If they were, students would be propelled to try new things,” Brosious said. “We are trying to get youth engaged in making choices that they want,” Annie Doran, youth program director, said. She said a common complaint that she hears at schools is that school menu items are the same day after day. Brosious said that the three options made on Friday are “food items with nutrients that will help you be your best.”
