Event benefits Young Writers

LITCHFIELD — Oak Hill Young Writers Club will throw a benefit from 5:30 to 7:30 p.m. Saturday, April 27, at Carrie Ricker School, 573 Richmond Road.

The event will feature a baked potato dinner with all the fixings and a dessert auction as well as Carrie Ricker and Oak Hill students, Minot writer Martha Stevens-David and local musical entertainment.

Tickets are $6 for adults, $3 for students under 12 and $18 for families. There is a child’s meal option.

Common loon conservation

PORTLAND — The inaugural presentation of the University of Southern Maine’s Environmental Science honor society, Kappa Alpha Omicron, will feature Jim Paruk, director for the Center for Loon Conservation, discussing “Common Loon Conservation and Behavior in Maine.” The event, which is free and open to the public, will be held at 6 p.m. on Monday, April 29 in USM’s Wishcamper Center.

Paruk is an adjunct professor of biology at USM where he supervises graduate students involved in loon research. He has been studying loons throughout North and Central America for nearly two decades. Paruk has taught college courses in ornithology, zoology, ecology and animal behavior.

Senior College annual luncheon

AUGUSTA — The University of Maine at Augusta Senior College will hold its Annual Meeting Luncheon and Recognition day from noon to 1:15 p.m. Friday, May 3, in the Fireplace Lounge of the Randall Student Center.

The purpose of the meeting is election of board members, and to recognize instructors and students. Students also have an opportunity to display materials from various classes. A light lunch will be served, and all members are encouraged to come.

Mayflower Descendants meet

AUGUSTA — The Society of Mayflower Descendants in the State of Maine will hold its annual spring luncheon Saturday, May 4, at the Elk’s Lodge, 397 Civic Center Drive, beginning at noon. The cost is $22 per person; advance reservations are required. Last date for reservations is April 27.

The event is open to nonmembers, and persons eligible to join the society are highly encouraged to attend. Membership is open to descendants of persons who arrived in the New World aboard the Mayflower in 1620.

A seminar will be held before the luncheon, beginning at 10 a.m., to explain the application process and the requirements for proof of decent from Mayflower passengers. Information on available sources of genealogical research will also be provided.

College music scholarship

GORHAM — The 2013 Anne Gannett Scholarship Competition for Music Majors at the college level will be held at 9 a.m. Saturday, June 8, in Corthell Hall, University of Southern Maine.

This biennial competition is open to residents of Maine, wherever they may be enrolled in school, and to non-residents who study in Maine. Applicants must be sophomore or junior music majors in any accredited music school, college or university in September 2013.

First prize is $3000, second $1500 and third, $1000.

Additional prized of $100 each for the top ranked performer in each of the following categories will be awarded: piano, organ, voice, strings, winds, musical theater and harp.
