1969 – 2013

LEWISTON — Mark A. Hume, 43, of Livermore Falls, passed away courageously and peacefully at Central Maine Medical Center in Lewiston on April 24. He was always faithful and strong in his beliefs and eagerly accepted God’s hand on the journey home. His passing ended his courageous lifelong battle with cystic fibrosis, and all who knew him will remember how he fought the odds of his disease. He and all who knew him were always thankful for the good years following his double lung transplant Dec. 5, 2009.

He was born Nov. 27, 1969, in Waterville, the son of Gerald Hume and Joyce (Quimby) Hume. Mark graduated from Leavitt Area High School in 1989 and completed the culinary arts program at CMTC in 1990.

He never was one to let his physical limitations stand in his way and played on both the Leavitt and the CMTC soccer teams. As a youngster, Scouting was his passion and his interest carried him to the rank of Eagle Scout in 1987. Cooking was always an interest and he worked in area restaurants and in the CMMC food service department. His last employment was with the former CBA Security in Lewiston as a dispatcher and later doing installations of business and residential alarm systems until his health declined to the point of disability in 1999. In later years, he developed an avid interest in Karaoke singing and he performed at many local places in the Rumford/Livermore Falls area. Mark also enjoyed fishing from an early age into his later years, as well as home gardening. He took such pride in the grounds of his home and his home garden. Before his health declined, he and his dad spent many enjoyable years on woodworking projects, home remodeling and working on the family camp in Lower Enchanted Township. After meeting his wife, Marilyn, his final years were spent enjoying his extended family. Marilyn’s sisters always referred to Mark as the brother they never had and they loved him dearly, as he did them. He was known as Uncle Mark to many of his friends’ children. Mark touched the lives and hearts of so many people and served as an inspiration to all who knew him.

Mark is survived by his wife, Marilyn, of Livermore Falls, and her children and grandchildren, all of whom he loved as though they were his own; his parents, Joyce and Jerry Hume of Turner; his father-in-law, Charles Lloyd McKenna; sisters-in-law, Debra (Merle) Perry, Brenda Hoyt, Nancy Martineau, Lisa (Jeff) Dayon and Crystal McKenna; uncles, aunts, numerous cousins, nieces and nephews.

Mark is predeceased by his mother in law, Shirley McKenna, whom he loved dearly; his grandparents; three aunts; one uncle; and cousins.

We will all feel his presence in our lives each and every day for the rest of eternity. We all thank God for making him a part of our lives. The family would like to express their appreciation to the staff of Central Maine Medical Center for the care, love and compassion given to Mark as a patient over his entire life and most recently by the wonderful staff of the ICU wing. As well, to the staff of Brigham and Women’s Hospital in Boston for the gift of life with his transplant in 2009.  Messages of condolence may be sent to www.finleyfuneralhome.com.
