Just before supper Wednesday, Mrs. Arthur Lombard, who lives at the corner of Sabatis and College streets, Lewiston, hung out a washing. When she took in the clothes, Thursday morning, four expensive pieces of linen — a Battenburg scarf, a Cluny lace table scarf, a white linen shirt waist and a sideboard scarf — were missing. The darkness of the night, the street lights being off, gave anyone a good opportunity to do the thieving and it is supposed that the deed was committed by someone who either saw Mrs. Lombard hanging out the clothes or noticed them on the line before dark. Anyhow, the culprit knew good linen and was careful to take the choicest pieces on the line.

The potential financial situation of the city changed several times. A small surplus first was indicated by the auditor’s office, and then a much larger one was announced. The crowning blow occurred Friday when the outside auditing form of Pacios and Gervais disclosed an error which converted a presumed $32,000 surplus into a $13,000-plus deficit.

Androscoggin County sheriff’s deputies worked with divers Saturday to recover five vehicles — at least two of them stolen — from a quarry off Garfield Road in Auburn, and Sheriff Ronald Gagnon says authorities plan to question two adult suspects. “We had gotten a tip from a gentleman in Turner who had his vehicle stolen last week. Lt. Det. Matthew Pitcher went to the scene on Thursday and discovered an oil slick there. Divers found five vehicles submerged in about 35 feet of water. Gagnon speculated that they were pushed into the water from a 30-foot cliff.
