1924 – 2013
NORWAY — Paul David Maass, 88, of Norway and South Paris passed away unexpectedly on Sunday, April 28 at Stephens Memorial Hospital with his loving family by his side.
Paul was born in Philadelphia, Pa. on Sept. 19, 1924, son of Paul H. and Edna M. Maass.
Paul retired from his work as an air traffic controller for the Federal Aviation Administration in 1972. Prior to the FAA, Paul was a private pilot, owning and operating the Catskill Airport in New York State.
He served with the United States Marine Corps in the World War II Pacific Campaign. Paul was very patriotic; he was proud of his country and his service in the Marine Corps. He joined the VFW after his discharge in 1945 and supported his comrades for the next 68 years.
In addition to his lifelong passion for aviation, Paul was skilled as a welder, electrician and woodworker.
Paul traveled the United States extensively with Shirley, his wife of 67 years, including four cross-country trips to Alaska. The couple resided for a year on Alaska’s Kodiak Island. He was an avid fisherman and boater, and enjoyed literature. He also loved to sing, draw and sketch.
Paul is survived by his wife, Shirley; sons, Paul Charles and wife, Lois, and Bruce Alan and wife, Donna; daughters Michele and husband, Bill, and Bonnie Sue and companion, Mark; and sisters Eleanor and Adelaide. Paul and Shirley have been blessed with 14 grandchildren and 13 great-grandchildren.
Paul is preceded in death by his parents; sisters, Dorothy and Martha; and granddaughter, Michele Suzanne Jones.
Paul’s family will miss his love, companionship, sense of humor and the twinkle in his eye when surrounded by his loved ones.
