100 years ago, 1913
Delbert P. Andrews and John P. Breen of Lewiston have been awarded the contract for carrying the United States mail between the Lewiston and Auburn post offices and the five railway stations. The contract is four years at $4,000 per year. Mr. Andrews says he and Mr. Breen and he may decide to do away with horses altogether and use autos. Three teams are required to do this work. Twelve minutes are allowed for going from the Lewiston post office to the Grand Trunk station; ten minutes to the Bates Street station; eight minutes to the Main Street station. In Auburn, ten minutes are allowed to go to the Grand Trunk station and eight minutes to the Maine Central.

50 years ago, 1963
The Raymond Rodrigues of Dill St., Lewiston, won’t know it until they read this, but there IS a way in which they can stop that pesky robin from slamming himself against the window panes of their house. A caller to the Journal said it must be a male, and what he wants to do is fight the other male he sees in the window glass reflection. She suggests that the Rodrigues turn the lights on in the house, and the upset robin will no longer see the “other bird.”

25 years ago, 1988
For now, the Lewiston Raceway owns the bragging rights as Maine’s fastest racing oval. Sunday afternoon, crowd favorite Righteous Bucks, after barely avoiding a galloping Snudge N in the first turn, paced by favorite Cretan Thunder in the stretch, capturing the $30,000 Allan M. Mollison Pace in the state-record time of 1:56.4 over an oval dulled by several days of poor weather.
