LYMAN — A four-year-old girl was killed Monday evening when an SUV driven by her mother crashed into a tree in the York County town of Lyman, Maine State Police have confirmed.

Killed in the crash was Venna Cline, who turned four on Valentine’s Day, spokesman Stephen McCausland of the Maine Department of Public Safety said Monday night in a press release. She was sitting in the rear passenger seat behind her mother when the woman lost control of the SUV and struck a tree about 7:30 p.m.

The crash took place a short distance from the family’s home on the Walker Road. The mother, Tonya Cline, 32, and a second, teenage daughter escaped the crash with minor injuries. A team of state troopers continues to investigate and police say speed was a likely factor in the crash.
