The boat racing season at Lake Auburn will start with a bang Saturday afternoon at 5 o’clock when Ernest Jackson’s J.I.C. attempts to cross the finish line ahead of Henry George in his Greyhound. The Coswak Canoe club will run the race and if possible will have races every Saturday afternoon thru the season. Mr. Jackson’s boat is a brand new 10 H.P. hydroplane model and is said to eat the distance like a small boy going thru a wedge of rhubarb pie. Mr. George has a V-bottom model of his own designing, with a 6 H.P. engine that can make it travel. There will probably be some canoe races during the afternoon.

The mischief includes the cutting of hose used to water the putting greens, the breaking of flag poles on the greens and larceny of golf balls. Players on the course have complained that children have darted out of the woods and stolen their golf balls before they could reach the spot where the ball dropped.

The contract between Androscoggin County and the sheriff’s deputies’ union signed Wednesday night will make deputies’ salaries competitive with other counties in the state and for the first time contains provisions which will eliminate the county’s practice of paying employees who work overtime with compensatory time off. Sgt. Eric Parker, chief negotiator for the union, said the new scale is a great improvement over the old scale, which has been frozen at its 1981 level since the union came in.
