AUGUSTA — Gov. Paul LePage has vetoed a bill allowing school districts to hire superintendents without regard for whether they live within the district they will head.
In his veto message Tuesday, the governor said the bill would override decisions of local voters who have added residency requirements to their charters. LePage says state government “should not lightly put itself above the decisions of local voters.”
The bill was submitted after Biddeford school officials hired a superintendent who lives in neighboring Saco, a violation of Biddeford’s residency requirement for superintendents. LePage said he’s received dozens of letters urging him to veto the bill from residents of Biddeford, where voters have chosen to keep residency charter provisions.
