National Teacher Appreciation Day was Tuesday, May 7. We take this time to communicate to educators support for their efforts in providing a quality education for our children.

Despite the Department of Education’s report, Lewiston’s “C” school teachers, education support professionals and administrators are caring, conscientious and collaborative.

Lewiston’s “D” school educators and leadership show determination, dedication and dependability, while our “F” school faculties and administration show fortitude, fairness and flexibility.

Maine’s communities have specific demographics that factor into the final report, and Lewiston teachers work very hard to provide opportunities for all children to be successful.

Many educators go to their school at 5 a.m. and stay until 5 p.m. or later, and then return during the weekend. Last year, more than 240 educators participated in Take One, the first phase of national board certification. Another 20 or more teachers are participating in the program this year, while several teachers are submitting paperwork for full national board certification. Our teachers model being “life-long learners.”

Maine educators are leading the way to great public schools for all students. It would be nice if people could take a moment this week to send a note, email, or call a member of the educational community to express support for their dedication to their profession.
