AUBURN — In honor of National Public Works Week, Gov. LePage recognizes May 19-25 as National Public Works Week in the State of Maine.

Instituted as a public education campaign by the American Public Works Association in 1960, “National Public Works Week calls attention to the importance of public works in community life. APWA seeks to raise the public’s awareness of public works issues, and to increase confidence in public works employees who are dedicated to improving the quality of life for present and future generations.”

This year’s theme, “Because of Public Works,” is about the quality of life brought to communities around the world. We are able to have clean water, safe streets and neighborhoods, efficient traffic and safe, clean communities “Because of Public Works…”

The Maine Chapter of the APWA is proud to sponsor and participate in regional and community events where the public can view various equipment used every day to keep our roads and public infrastructure working properly. These events will also give the public an opportunity to speak with Public Works Professionals.

A local event will be held from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. Friday, May 17, at Auburn Mall, Center Street, Auburn.

Families are encouraged to bring their children to explore dump trucks, along with demonstrations and displays by public works departments from Auburn, Lewiston, Sabattus and Turner.

Also on tap will be toy hard hats, balloons, plenty of giveaways and games. In addition, local retail gift cards will be given away as door prizes. The event is also an opportunity for residents to observe what’s being done to enhance local communities.

For additional information about the May 17 event, residents may contact Auburn Public Works Director Denis D’Auteuil at ddauteuil@auburnmaine.gov.

Other events will be held from 9 a.m. to 1 p.m. Saturday, May 18, at The Gateway Shoppes, Payne Road, Scarborough, and from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. Thursday, May 23, at Kittery Trading Post, US Route 1 in Kittery.
