Monmouth Garden Club

MONMOUTH — Lisa Colburn, author of “The Maine Garden Journal,” will speak to the Monmouth Garden Club at 8 p.m. Thursday, May 23, at the A Rise and Shine Bed and Breakfast on Route 135.

She will explain how she created this collaborative book about gardening in Maine. The presentation will offer glimpses of the most-recommended trees, shrubs, perennials, annuals, spring bulbs, tropical plants, as well as houseplants. She will indicate the best garden centers in the state and why Maine gardeners order many plants from online and print catalogs.

Garden tours, garden art and more will be discussed in this whirlwind tour of Maine garden-related topics. The public is invited.

Shaker opening weekend events

NEW GLOUCESTER — The 2013 season of the Sabbathday Lake Shaker Museum, Route 26, will open at 10 a.m. Friday, May 24.

The museum is open Mondays through Saturdays (closed Sundays), 10 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. through Oct. 14. The site features tours, exhibits, special events and a museum shop. For information call 207-926-4597 or visit www.shaker.lib.me.us.

Participants in a one-day workshop on Saturday, May 25, will learn how to make in a a 2-foot by 3-foot canvas floorcloth. Instructor is Betsy Grecoe. The fee of $55 includes materials. Pre-registration is required.

Guided Nature Hikes through the fields and woods of Sabbathday Lake Shaker Village will be available at 10 a.m. and 1:30 p.m. Saturday, May 25. Highlights include Loon’s Point on Sabbathday Lake, Aurelia’s Cascade, Old Grandfather and the Old County Road. Cost is $5  for adults; $2 for children; under 6 free.

Sabattus Memorial Day parade

SABATTUS — The Sabattus Memorial Day Parade will be held on Monday, May 27. It is scheduled to begin at 11 a.m. at the Sabattus American Legion, on the Island Road.

The parade will proceed onto Main Street, to Elm Street; turn onto Hemlock then on to Greene Street, ending at the veterans monument, where services will be held. This year music will be provided by the Oak Hill Middle School Band with songs provided by Oak Hill High School’s Voices of Color.

Following the Memorial Day Service, there will be the announcement of the proposed new Sabattus Veterans Memorial Park with the unveiling of the official park project logo. The park is located near the current Veterans Memorials area. Following the events the parade will return to the Legion Hall.

All veterans organizations and local youth organizations are invited to join the parade. Those interested in participating should be at the post home no later than 10:30 a.m. For more information call the Sabattus American Legion at 375-4058 or Ron Caron at 375-4639.

Turner tribute to veterans

TURNER — Turner Memorial Post 111, the Sons of the American Legion and the Auxiliary will pay tribute to veterans at 10 a.m. Monday, May 27, at the Turner Village Monument, Bryant Monument and the bridge.

A similar ceremony will be held at 11 a.m. at the North Turner Monument.

State Representative Jeff Timberlake will be the guest speaker.

May 28 class on money matters

CASCO — A free class, “A Woman’s Guide to Money Matters,” will be held held from 6 to 7:30 p.m. Tuesday, May 28, by Karen Fuller, financial adviser at Edward Jones, at the Crooked River Adult Education. Call the Adult Education office at 207-627-4291 to reserve a spot.

Introduction to phlebotomy

AUBURN — Central Maine Community College will offer Introduction to Phlebotomy from 5 to 8 p.m. Wednesday evenings from June 5 to July 31. The cost is $475 and includes book and materials. Registration deadline is May 29.

A combination of lecture, lab and hands-on practical experience, this course will focus on developing skills needed to work in an entry level position as a phlebotomist. Coursework includes selecting and preparing the skin puncture site, collecting specimens, adhering to the proper health and safety guidelines, patient/technician relationship, and record keeping of laboratory tests. Upon completion, students may qualify for employment in hospitals, clinics, physicians’ offices and other health care settings.
