TURNER — Michelle Morin hurled seven innings of two-hit softball and drew ample run support as Leavitt outgunned Waterville 7-2 in a late-season KVAC softball matchup Monday.

Sarah Pare led the Hornets (3-10) with a pair of hits, while Sierra Santamango contributed with an RBI single.

Morgan Pellerin led the Panthers (3-11) with a two-run double in the third frame. Pellerin also suffered the loss after working the first three innings.

Carrabec 12, Mt. Abram 10

NORTH ANSON — Freshman sensation Bailey Atwood belted a two-run double in the sixth inning as Carrabec posted a 12-10 come-from-behind victory over Mt. Abram in an MVC softball tilt Monday.

Brooke Lewis and Paige Chadbourne led the Cobras (4-8) with three hits apiece, while Atwood finished with a pair of hits. Ashlee Knight also contributed with a double for Carrabec, while Mickayla Willette belted a two-run single. Jessica Vaillancourt earned her third win of 2013 after working the final three frames.

The Roadrunners (5-7) were paced by Jeanie Rowland with two hits and one RBI, while Taylor Jordan also pounded out two hits.

DiNuzzo named UMF head men’s soccer coach

FARMINGTON — Tommy DiNuzzo, an assistant coach for two of Division III’s elite men’s soccer coaches, was named the new head men’s soccer coach at the University of Maine at Farmington. UMaine-Farmington athletics director Julie Davis announced DiNuzzo’s hiring Monday.

DiNuzzo comes to UMaine-Farmington from Lynchburg College, where he has been a graduate assistant coach for the past two seasons to Hornets head coach Chris Yeager, the 2010 National Soccer Coaches Association of America (NSCAA) National Coach of the Year.

“Tommy was a standout candidate in a very deep pool of applicants,” said UFM athletics director Julie Davis. “He brings a lot of enthusiasm to the position, and his commitment to a creating an atmosphere of competitive and personal success for his student-athletes was the perfect match for what we were seeking in the next UMaine-Farmington men’s soccer coach.

Bates’ Highland picked to play in USILA North-South Game

LEWISTON — Bates senior midfielder Rob Highland of Yarmouth has been selected to play in the United States Intercollegiate Lacrosse Association (USILA)/LaxWorld Annual North-South Game.

The 72nd USILA North-South Games will be played at Edith Robb Dixon Field on the campus of Cabrini College in Radnor, Pa., on Friday May 24, 2013. The Division III game will be played at 3pm, followed by the Division I/II game at 5:30. The tradition started in 1940 and has been played every year with the exception of 1944 and 1945.

Huskies Sweep D3Baseball.com New England Region Awards

GORHAM — D3baseball.com announced its eight all-region teams and regional postseason awards today and the NCAA Division III World Series-bound University of Southern Maine Huskies placed seven players on the All-New England Region team and swept the region’s four major awards.

Senior outfielder Tucker White was named the Player of the Year. Junior left-hander Logan Carman was selected as the Pitcher of the Year, and freshman shortstop Sam Dexter was chosen as the Rookie of the Year. In addition, veteran head coach Ed Flaherty was picked as the Coach of the Year.

White, Carman, junior designated hitter Chris Bernard and senior third baseman Nick Grady were named to the All-Region first team.

Dexter and junior outfielder Forrest Chadwick received spots on the All-Region second team, and junior catcher Matt Verrier of Norway was the recipient of a spot on the All-Region third team.
