BUCKFIELD — Dalton Hart had plenty of reasons to not be as sharp as he was on the mound for Buckfield on Tuesday.
But on a clammy day, Hart, making just his second start in two years, attacked the strike zone and helped the Bucks avenge their only loss of the season with an 11-3 win over Richmond.
Hart went the distance, allowing four hits and one earned run while striking out seven. He didn’t walk a batter until the seventh inning, a stark contrast to Richmond pitchers, who issued a dozen walks in six innings.
“My father always tells me to throw inside and to locate it all the time. I always work on throwing inside because I can’t throw as hard as I used to. Hopefully, my third baseman will make the plays,” said Hart, who was making his first start since May 13 against Forest Hills. “All of my pitches were going right for me today.”
“He’s been a great story because he pitched as a sophomore and he was hurt all last season with elbow issues and he couldn’t pitch at all,” Buckfield coach Joe McLaughlin said. “He stepped up as our No. 3 this year. When he’s been in there, he’s always around the plate, which has been huge.”
The Bucks (8-1) quickly deduced that Richmond starter Randy Moody was not going to be around the plate. Even though they didn’t get anything out of a bases loaded, nobody out first inning, they worked Moody for 11 walks in 2 2/3 innings.
“Coach told us to just be patient,” Hart said. “If he gets one strike, then start to focus on swinging, but pretty much take the first pitch and wait until he gives you a good one to hit.”
Hart walked three times and also had a bases-clearing single in the fifth. Tyler Vallee reached base in all five of his plate appearances, including two singles, and scored four times. Jonah Williams reached base five times, while Owen Bennett had two singles, two walks and scored twice.
Eddie Stewart had two hits, including a double, to lead Richmond (5-6), which beat the Bucks, 5-4, on May 7. Mike Stewart drove in two of the Bobcats three runs with sacrifice flies.
The Bucks broke through with two runs in the second on a Jared Eastman double and four consecutive walks. They added four more in the third without a hit. Six walks and an error chased Moody off the mound for reliever Nate Vintinner.
Buckfield started to swing the bats to break the game open in the fifth. Consecutive singles by Vallee, Bennett and Jonah Williams loaded the bases. Hart followed with a single to left-center that cleared the bases, with Williams coming home on a throwing error. Keenan Stockdale added an RBI double to make it 10-1.
“Our hitting has jelled in the last week or so,” McLaughlin said. “We had a couple struggles early on in the season. I feel like we were hitting the ball right to people. We’re finally finding some green recently.”
