NORWAY — A Memorial Day parade will be held starting at 9 a.m. Monday, May 27.
The parade will step off at the Advertiser-Democrat Block on the corner of Pikes Hill Road and Main Street, proceed down Main Street with a brief wreath-laying ceremony at the Civil War Monument and finish at the Norway Veterans Memorial Park, across from the Stone-Smart American Legion Hall on Main Street.
The ceremony will include an opening prayer, the Pledge of Allegiance, ceremonies by Stone-Smart Post No. 82 Legion and Auxiliary members, and Veterans of Foreign Wars Post 9787, a reading of The Gettysburg Address and the World War I poem “In Flanders Fields.” The program will finish with placement of wreaths on each of the monuments and a salute by a firing squad. The Oxford Hills Comprehensive High School band will march in the parade.
An invitation is extended to all Scouts and other youth organizations in the area to participate. The parade lineup will assemble behind the Fare Share Co-op at 8:30 a.m.
In case of inclement weather there will be no parade but the Memorial Day ceremony will be held inside the Stone-Smart American Legion Hall on Main Street. Following the parade and service there will be refreshments in hall.
