MADISON — Undefeated Madison beat Oak Hill, 5-3, in MVC softball action Wednesday, but not without some controversy.
According to Oak Hill coach Allyson Collins, freshman Jamie Prue alerted coaches early in the game that she thought the pitcher’s circle was closer to home plate than the regulation 43 feet.
For the first three innings, the game was played with the mound 40 feet from the plate, rather than the required 43 feet. While Madison officials searched for a tape measure to check the distance, Madison jumped out to a 2-0 lead in the third inning.
After Oak Hill’s suspicions were confirmed and the plate moved back three feet, the Raiders (10-3) tied the game with two in the top of the fourth. Madison (15-0) answered with three in the bottom of the frame and starting pitcher Emily McKenney made the lead stand up, scattering six hits over seven innings.
Collins said she hoped to protest the result, but the Maine Principal’s Association softball bulletin states “Maine has no protest rule or option. If a rule interpretation or application is in question, the issue must be discussed and resolved before resumption of play.”
Kelsey Collins and Brianna Hodgkins led Oak Hill with two hits apiece. Collins and Kortni Michaud each hit a double for the Raiders. Kirsten Wood led the Bulldogs with two hits.
