LEWISTON — It was one of those games the Lewiston softball team has waited all season to savor.

The Blue Devils got an early lead Wednesday, expanded it and enjoyed it to the fullest in a 15-3 victory over Brunswick. It was the second win of the season for Lewiston.

“We have not had that luxury this season yet, to really come away with one like this,” said Lewiston coach Erica Crowley.

The first Blue Devils’ victory came at Brunswick, 6-5. So to enjoy an early lead and a win a game shortened by the mercy rule in five innings was something new.

“It feels good,” said centerfielder Sami Rioux. “We’re not really used it. We feel proud.”

Lewiston scored seven runs in the first and added five in the second and finished with nine hits.

“It was nice to see the girls come alive at the plate,” said Crowley. “It wasn’t like their pitcher was walking us. We were hitting. They were alive at the plate and aggressive on the bases.”

Rioux led the Blue Devils (2-14) with three hits, three doubles and four RBI. Michelle Malia had a pair of hits and drove in two while Mikaela Brown had a single and plated three runs.

“It got us going and really brought our spirits up in the dugout,” said Rioux of her team’s early offense. “It was nice to finally get some good hits.”

Lewiston was also solid in the field. Brunswick finished with six hits, but four of those came in the final inning. Erica Brochu allowed just two hits, one run and only walked two through four innings. The Blue Devils were also errorless in the field.

“We’re solid in the field,” said Crowley. “We made the plays we had to make. It was a clean game for us.”

Brunswick got the first run when Rachel Moroney led off with a single. She finished with three of the Dragons (0-15) hits. She stole a pair of bases and then scored on a passed ball.

“It did make me a little nervous when they got that first run,” said Crowley. “But the girls hit well and came through.”

Lewiston answered in a big way in the bottom of the inning, getting four hits and sending 13 batters to the plate. Malia tied the game with an RBI single that scored Rioux, who led off with a double. Maegan Mathon walked in a run and a slow roller by Morgan Bowen in front of the plate scored Malia when the pitcher tried to get the force at home and failed. Brown followed with a two-run single. Rioux finished it off with a two-run double for a 7-1 lead.

“The beginning of the year, we were really nervous,” said Rioux. “We didn’t know how we’d do with a new coach and everything. It was kind of nerve-wracking but we’ve built our team and we’ve gotten stronger throughout the year.”

Lewiston added five more in the second to make it 12-1. Brown scored on a Mathon fielder’s choice. Then Rioux doubled in two more. Cleo Miller singled in a run and two more came in on an error on a Brochu hit.

The Blue Devils added three more in the third. Miller walked in a run and scored on a Meghan Girouard single. Lauren Belleau later singled and scored on an error.

Brunswick added two in the fifth, Leah Andreotti and Jena Libby each had RBI singles. The Dragons starter K.K. Teel was relieved by Maddie Wilkes in the third. Teel returned in the fourth after Wilkes was hit by a line drive.

Since the previous win over Brunswick, Lewiston had lost seven straight but four of those were by four runs or less, including a two-run loss and another by a single run.

“Our scores are always getting better,” said Crowley, whose team finishes with Cony and Messalonskee. “We’ve improved throughout the year and our margins are shrinking every time.”
