AUBURN — A Decoration Day remembrance ceremony will be held at noon Monday, May 27, at Oak Hill Cemetery.

Members of William J. Rogers Post 153, American Legion, Alden M Gayton Post 31, American Legion, Capt. Frank W. Hulett Post 1603, VFW,  and city officials will conduct the Memorial Day service.

Memorial Day was originally called Decoration Day, a day of remembrance for those who have died in the nation’s service. While Waterloo, N.Y., was officially declared the birthplace of Memorial Day by President Lyndon Johnson in May 1966, a growing movement to honor the dead culminated in Gen. Logan giving his official proclamation in 1868, said Paul Bernard, New Auburn post commander.

“It is not important who was the very first, what is important is that Memorial Day was established. Memorial Day is not about division. It is about reconciliation; it is about coming together to honor those who gave their all and that is why we are all working together for this special community ceremony stated City Councilor Tizz Crowley.

The ceremony will begin with an old Navy hymn, “Eternal Father, Strong to Save,” followed by an address given by Auburn Mayor Jonathan P LaBonte. A poem, “Flanders Field,” will be read by President of the Gold Star Mothers Bethel Shields and Roger Renaud will play “The Last Post.”

A Wreath of Remembrance will be placed by Lisa Bonnefant and Claire Poirier, cannons will be fired by Keith Davis and an ode will be read by Tizz Crowley, said Bernard.
