In the editorial May 12, Rex Rhodes wrote “The places where people used to regularly meet face to face and form lasting friendships have been disappearing for the past 20 years and are going fast.” He also wrote, “Last year, the Knights of Columbus Council 106, associated with Basilica of Saints Peter and Paul and the second-oldest council in Maine, closed its doors.”

While it is true that the Council building on East Avenue was sold last year, Council 106 is still very much an active organization at the Basilica, where Catholic gentlemen do meet regularly to form lasting friendships while serving the church and community.

At this year’s state convention, Council 106 was the recipient of several awards for its work with the Protecting the Unborn movement.

Council 106 spends several thousand dollars a year on a Christmas and Easter party for physically or mentally challenged individuals in the area.

Through the years, the Council has helped, and will continue to help, families or individuals in need by sponsoring benefit suppers or dances.

I am a proud member of Knights of Columbus Council 106, which is still very much alive and active at the Basilica of Saints Peter and Paul.
