BETHEL — The Bethel Library will host its 18th annual plant sale from 9 to 10 a.m. Saturday, June 1, on the lawn beside the library.

Proceeds will help purchase new equipment and pay for renovations.

Library volunteer Susan Day, who is on the plant sale committee, said the sale traditionally has a “huge turnout.”

“We only sell plants for an hour in the morning, and typically, we raise around $1,000,” Day said. “We live in such a small community, so it’s great that we do as well as we do.”

The plants are “affordable, pesticide-free perennials from local gardens,” according to a news release.

Day said she and other committee members accept donations from residents, but also get “a lot of the plants from our own garden.”

The committee came up with a new idea this year to get more people interested, she said.

“We decided that from 9:15 to 9:30 a.m., we are going to give away some free gifts for gardeners,” she said. “It’s the first year we’ve tried it. Right now, we’re planning on giving away some chippers, gloves and knee pads. A lot of us buy the equipment and later donate them when we’re through with them.”

The money from the plant sale will be “put back into the library,” she said, “in the form of upgraded computers, new books and whatever else they need.”

Day said the plant sale committee includes Bethel Library Director Michelle Conroy, residents Norm Davis, Lenny Shaw, Susan Parker and former Telstar High School teacher John Applin.
