Former Republican Sen. Olympia Snowe said on MSNBC that former Senate Majority Leader Bob Dole is right about the state of the Republican party.
Snowe and Dole were part of a moderate, consensus-seeking wing of the GOP in the U.S. Senate. She talked about how consensus building has been lost in Congress.
“Yes, Republican do bear responsibility and do the Democrats,” Snowe said. “You have to work together and obviously, the Republican party is undergoing some, you know, significant and serious changes and they are going to have to rethink their approach as a political party and how they are going to regroup and become a governing majority party that appeals to a broader group of Americans than they do today.”
The current GOP ought to be “closed for repairs” because it lacks a vision and is unable to strike deals with Democrats, Dole said during an appearance on “Fox News Sunday.”
The Kansas Republican said he was disturbed by his party’s obstructionist behavior on Capitol Hill. “It seems almost unreal that we can’t get together on a budget or legislation,” he said.
Snowe is promoting a similar message that her book, “Fighting for Common Ground: How We Can Fix the Stalemate in Congress.” The book, released in May, is about her 34 years in Congress, how it went from a place where parties found compromise to where parties worked to make the other look bad.
