Two young men, not possessed of much skill in handling a canoe, were tipped into Lake Auburn Sunday afternoon. The did not give their names at the Knight boat house, where they hired the craft. Both were excellent swimmers and though some distance from shore were swimming strongly when sighted. Francis J. McMannus and Edward Congdon, who were nearby, rushed to their aid in a rowboat and succeeded in hauling both of them into the craft. As soon as the shore was reached, the young men fled into the woods to build a fire and dry off. The overturned canoe was returned to the boathouse.

Ward Four Alderman Frank J. Bussiere said today that Lewiston citizens will “be left holding the bag” to finance the city’s share of the Urban Renewal project, in criticism directed to those he termed “professional politicians” of the city. “The people are not aware of what’s behind that move Friday night, but I am,” Bussiere said, referring to the filibuster of Ward Six Alderman Paul Couture, who succeed in returning the budget to the Finance Board. Bussiere said the city’s borrowing capacity is too low at the present time to finance the Urban Renewal project and he added that the income derived from a city-wide revaluation project will help to pay for the Urban Renewal project.

The event originally called for a concert by pop artist Debbie Gibson, a wrestling show with the World Wrestling Federation, and a climax on July 4 with performances by area bands and fireworks. Co-chairman Rick LaChapelle cited high costs as the reason for cancellation. “It costs $10,500 for insurance alone,” he said.
