BUCKFIELD — Selectmen on Tuesday discussed the town elections and the RSU 10 budget vote to be held Tuesday, June 11.
Voting will take place from 8 a.m. to 8 p.m. at the Municipal Center.
The school warrant includes the $36.18 million budget. There is also a question asking voters if they want to continue to have two votes to pass the budget.
Residents will also decide whether to start the process of formally studying withdrawing from RSU 10.
Resident Judy Berg pointed out that this just gets the question going and is only the first step in a 22-step process, if the town decides to withdraw. She also said the recent RSU 10 agreement to preserve the Dirigo High School in Dixfield permits the closure of Buckfield Junior-Senior High School, because it has too few students in grades nine through 12.
Outgoing Superintendent Tom Ward said the RSU 10 has saved taxpayers millions of dollars since it was formed four years ago by combining SADs 39 in Buckfield, 43 in Rumford-Mexico, and 21 in Dixfield.
Berg responded that at the present rate of increase, the RSU 10 budget will double in less than 10 years. She said she believes there would be better educational results, more local control and less cost if SAD 39 were revived and close ties were established with SAD 17 in the Oxford Hills.
Jeff Pfeifer, organizer of the Sumner Save Our Schools committee, said the committee has twice the number of signatures needed to call for a similar vote and they will submit their petition, if Buckfield approves their measure.
Pfeifer said Hartford residents are waiting for the results in Buckfield and Sumner before they start a petition drive there.
Buckfield, Sumner and Hartford were the three towns that made up SAD 39.
In town elections, Cheryl Coffman and Glen Holmes are seeking a three-term term created when Selectman Robin Buswell resigned. Michelle Casey and Maida Demers-Dobson are running for RSU 10 director.
The annual town meeting will be held at 9 a.m. June 15 at the high school.
Capt. Bly’s Tavern co-owner Jason Rowe spoke to selectmen about two recent incidents in which police were summoned.
“We are taking steps,” he said, to deal with such incidents. “If you are looking for trouble, go somewhere else,” he said.
