The meeting held in Mexico recently to explain the budget proposals was informative. However, there was one issue that was not addressed.

I understand that recreation programs and the library are non-essentials, but there was no discussion about what would happen to the town-owned buildings housing them if recreation and the library were shut down.

A vacant building deteriorates rapidly. A vacant building is vulnerable to vandals, fire and vermin. Within a few years’ time, would taxpayers be faced with having to raise money to demolish a hazardous eyesore? Remember Rumford’s Stephens High School?

I would prefer to see the buildings in active use and ask selectmen to pursue savings through regionalizing services.
