LEWISTON — Sustainability was the organizing theme of recent poster presentations by 28 students at USM’s Lewiston-Auburn College. Drawn from two sections of the college’s capstone, students discussed the results of their semester-long research and shared information about relevant resources with approximately 50 USM LAC faculty, staff and students, and Lewiston-Auburn area community members visiting the presentations.
Each section of the Senior Seminar class centers on one of the four themes of USM LAC’s Common Core curriculum: sustainability, democracy, justice and difference.
Professor Jan Hitchcock, instructor of both groups of students, focused her sections on sustainability, encouraging students to frame research on the topic in ways most meaningful to their individual professional and personal interests.
Presentations spanned aspects of sustainability, including food, deforestation, rapid urban development, “green” homes and health care facilities – and also physical and mental health, personal resources of time and energy, and spirituality.
