NORWAY — Bruce Cook and incumbent Michael Twitchell are running unopposed for seats on the Board of Selectmen in Tuesday’s annual town election.

Voters can cast ballots from 8 a.m. to 8 p.m. June 11 at the Norway Fire Station on Danforth Street.

Cook, who served on the Board of Selectmen from 2007 to 2010, is seeking one of two seats currently held by Irene Millett and Twitchell. Millett chose not to seek another term.

Cooks said he’s running “because I see the potential of Norway and I want to be part of shaping it for future generations. I bring a great deal of local experience to the position of selectman.”

He has served on the Planning Board, the Budget Committee and the Comprehensive Plan Committee. He is also president of the Lakes Association of Norway, treasurer of Norway Downtown, treasurer of the Norway Opera House Committee, treasurer of the local cable television station, and board chairman of Androscoggin Home Care & Hospice.

Twitchell, who describes himself as more of a listener than a talker, said he believes residents are most concerned about the effects of the school budget on their taxes.

“I hear a lot from homeowners about property taxes,” he said.

“I’ve enjoyed my first term. It”s been a good experience,” he said.

He said he would like to see a full-time fire chief in town and later, when the town’s finances are more stable, a new police station.

“I like Norway. We don’t seem to have (political) party problems,” he said. “We’re able to come together and do our work. It’s not you against me. It’s you and me together maybe we’ll do something. I would encourage anyone to run for office. I’m learning something every day.”

In addition to the candidates for selectmen, longtime SAD 17 Director Donald Ware is seeking  re-election.

Doris Ray and incumbent Tom Curtis are seeking a seat on the Norway Memorial Library Board of Trustees.
