DEAR SUN SPOTS: Our 11-year-old grandson is overweight and very distressed about it. I have heard “friends” tell him he’s fat, and he often tells us and his parents that he hates himself.

His doctor simply advised participating in sports, which he does, but it’s not nearly enough exercise or activity to help the weight problem. He really wants to do something about his weight and we (and his parents) want to help.

To that end, are there weight loss/nutrition/exercise programs in the Lewiston-Auburn area that work with children his age? There may be many families out there facing this challenging issue. Thank you so much for any information you can find or publish about this. — No Name via email

ANSWER: Sun Spots thinks the YMCA or YWCA could be just the ticket, but she expects readers will respond with some specific programs that have helped other children their families and will help your grandson.

Sun Spots applauds your willingness to participate. Studies show that children are more successful at losing weight when the whole family is involved.
