Summer Reading Race at FPL

FARMINGTON — The Summer Reading Race at Farmington Public Library will begin June 14, and end Aug. 3.

Read books and win prizes. The program is open to children of all ages, readers and listeners.

There will be prizes as incentives to keep reading. Devaney Doak & Garrett Booksellers, Narrow Gauge Cinemas, Gifford’s Ice Cream and Pizza Hut will be donating prizes.

All children are welcome to participate in the Summer Reading Program, but must have a valid library card to borrow materials. Those without a card can still sign up and read books at the library.

Borrowing privileges are free to Farmington residents. Industry residents are reimbursed for non-resident fees at the Industry Town Office. All others pay $25 per household annually.

Library story times will continue through the summer. Preschool Story Hours are Fridays at 10:15 and Baby Rhymes are Wednesdays at 10:15.

Lasagna supper at Grange

BETHEL — A lasagna supper will be held at 5 p.m. Saturday, June 15, at Alder River Grange.

Cost is $7 for adults and $3 for children under 12.

Hebron Academy ‘Green Sweep’ sale

HEBRON — The Hebron Academy Parents Association and Hebron juniors will host the school’s annual “Green Sweep” garage sale from 8 a.m. to 1 p.m. Saturday, June 15, in Robinson Arena on Route 119. The event is free and open to the public.

Each year a surplus of items is left in the dormitories after boarding students who are unable to bring home all belongings depart for the summer. Unwanted items are in good condition and have been mildly used; they include books, sports equipment, clothing, bedding, lamps, electronics, shoes, furniture and more.

Lawn sale June 15 at ‘Green Church’

MEXICO — A lawn sale will be held from 9 a.m. to 1 p.m. Saturday, June 15, at the Mexico Congregational Church, UCC (the “Green Church”).

The sale includes clothing, household goods and attic treasures. A bake sale will also be held inside in the Conference Room.

Eagles car show, pink sock hop

RUMFORD — The Fraternal Order of Eagles 1248 of Rumford Falls will hold their annual car show and pink sock hop from 1 to 4 p.m., Saturday, June 15.

Noel and Don will provide music from 1 to 3 p.m.

Food will be available for sale.

A dance, Chinese auction and 50/50 raffle will also take place from 8 p.m. to midnight in the function hall. The Hooligans will provide the music.

All proceeds will benefit breast cancer in the local area.

Indoor yard sale at Wilkins House

WATERFORD — An indoor yard sale will be held from 8 a.m. to noon Saturday, June 15, at the Wilkins House on Plummer Hill Road.

There will be many new household, craft and baby items plus books and toys. Something for all ages. All proceeds benefit the church and the Wilkins House.

Sons of Italy meet June 17

RUMFORD — Sons of Italy will meet at 6 p.m. Monday, June 17.

Volunteers to do odd jobs in and around the lodge are needed. New members and new ideas are also needed.

Garden Club tours local garden

FARMINGTON — Sally Smith of 233 Middle St., Farmington, will welcome Mt. Blue Area Garden Club members and guests to her yard at 5:30 p.m. Tuesday, June 18, where they will get to observe a garden that has been “a work in progress” for the past year.

Smith thinks of her garden as a “Friendship Garden” because many of her perennials have come from friends’ gardens. Club members are asked to bring a bagged lunch, a chair and a plant to swap. Desserts and beverages will be provided by hostesses Matiana Glass, Nita Patten and Carol Godomsky.

Club president Amy Palmer will conduct the monthly meeting. Anyone interested in gardening is welcome to attend. For more information call 645-2067.

Cryptogram contest winner

PARIS — Cassandra McAlister is the $5 winner of Paris Public Library’s May Cryptogram Contest.

June’s cryptograms are ready to pick up at the library’s front desk. This month’s focus is quotes. June’s completed cryptograms need to be in on or before June 29 for the $5 drawing.

‘Speaking Up For Us’ meeting

RUMFORD — Hope Association will hold “Speaking Up For Us,” a meeting on community employment, at noon Thursday, June 20, at 85 Lincoln Ave.

Guest speaker will be Vickie Morton. The meeting is open to the public.
