Years ago, I had the opportunity to visit a retreat center in southern Maine. It was run by the Catholic Church, and welcomed guests of all faiths to come for reflection and rest.

There was an evening that I spent in a beautifully appointed space speaking with a priest about many things. The walls were adorned with ribbons of vines and flowers. Midst that art were the words,”How much do you need?” That began another conversation about choices in life.

When I read that Central Maine Medical Center purchased the St. Joseph Church on Main Street with plans to create yet another parking lot, that line on the wall resonated in me. The United Baptist Church was replaced by a parking lot — the possibility of another across the street was disturbing.

Cities need green space. I could only imagine the possibility of a small park with flowers, trees and benches adding to the renaissance of downtown Lewiston.

How much more space does the hospital need, and how much more can Lewiston afford to provide for it?
