AUBURN — Police shut down a section of southbound Washington Street on Wednesday after a car plowed through a guardrail and a utility pole, pulling down wires before crashing over an embankment.

No one was hurt, but a couple was stranded inside the car because a power line had fallen across it, police said.

The crash occurred at about 5:40 p.m. in the southbound lanes near Washington Street and Rodman Road. The car plowed into a Central Maine Power pole, police said, which was supporting major, high-tension power lines.

Police said the car was driven by Angelika Cray, 21, of Lewiston, who was driving with a suspended license. She was charged, as was her passenger, Josh Piela, 25, of Turner, who was arrested on four outstanding warrants.

Police said the couple had been staying at the Bass Motel, not far from the crash site.

Rescue crews had to contend with potentially live wires while trying to reach the man and woman inside the disabled car. Police called for Public Works to begin closing a stretch of Washington Street near Miami Avenue, as an investigation began and cleanup got underway.

The commuter-hour crash caused traffic issues along the heavily traveled Washington Street. The road was closed until about 2 a.m.

Rodman Road runs off Washington Street between Miami Avenue and Phil-O-Mar Street.
