BUCKFIELD — After a late-night recount, Cheryl Coffman was declared the winner of a three-year term on the Board of Selectmen by a single vote.

Coffman received 106 votes, compared to the 105 for Glen Holmes.

An unofficial recount, called at about 10 p.m. Tuesday, was attended by both candidates after the first round of hand-counting ballots.

On Wednesday, Town Clerk Cindy Dunn said the result remained the same after the unofficial recount, declaring Coffman the winner.

Coffman said she was pleased with the result and proud to serve the people of her community.

A lifelong Buckfield resident, Coffman served as the longtime adult education coordinator in Buckfield and the Oxford Hills and has been the secretary of the town Planning Board.

Coffman said she would take her time getting used to serving on the board and becoming familiar with some of the major issues facing the town, such as the possible new fire station and withdrawing from RSU 10, before proposing any plans of her own.

“I’m just going to take it one thing at a time,” she said.

Holmes wished Coffman all the best for her term on the board.

“There’s a lot of good people in this community and it was a good race,” Holmes said. “I’m sure Cheryl will do a great job for the town.”

Holmes is the director of the Western Maine Economic Development Council and was Buckfield’s town manager from 2004 to 2012.

This is the second year in a row that a tight Buckfield selectman’s race has resulted in a recount.

Last year, Martha Catevenis won against incumbent Eileen Hotham by four votes.
