FARMINGTON — University of Maine at Farmington’s Longfellow Mountains — a unique writing workshop for rising high school juniors and seniors — is now opening its doors to talented young writers who will be sophomores in high school this fall. This fourth annual summer workshop will run from Sunday, July 14, through Saturday, July 20, on the UMF campus.

“Parents of rising high school sophomores have contacted us with interest in the program, and we’ve made a real effort to try to meet those needs,” said Shana Youngdahl, UMF assistant professor of English and co-director of the Longfellow Mountains program. “We’re excited about being able to offer this opportunity to an even broader group of high school students who have an aptitude for the written word and are looking to develop their creative writing talents.”

The only week-long young writers summer workshop in New England, Longfellow Mountains provides talented high school writers with the opportunity to work with expert UMF faculty and published authors as students immerse themselves in the writing world. The conference holds small supportive workshops in poetry, nonfiction, screenwriting and fiction taught by UMF faculty and guest lecturers from the local writing community.

Cost of the week-long program is $800, which includes tuition, room, board and fees. Applications are available at creativewriting.umf.maine.edu/longfellow. Payment is due by July 1.
