PORTLAND (AP) — An inmate at the Cumberland County Jail is facing an assault charge for allegedly punching a guard in the mouth during a brawl at the facility last month.
Jail officials said the May 29 brawl in a medium-security housing unit started as a dispute between two inmates over magazines.
The fight was quickly brought under control and 10 inmates determined to be involved were removed from the unit and placed under administrative segregation in other areas of the jail.
While breaking up the fight, guard Tyrone Leslie was punched in the mouth by inmate Mohamed Abdi. Leslie required stitches.
Jail officials said the 23-year-old Abdi has been charged with assault on an officer.
