A list of the Shoe Manufacturing cities of the United States shows that Auburn is the fourth in output. The three others are New England cities: Brockton, first, Lynn, second, and Haverhill, third. Within the last year, Auburn has made a great increase in the amount of business done.

50 years ago, 1963
New pedestrian control buttons for the “walk” lights at four major intersections in Auburn have been installed but are not yet in operation. Auburn Police Lt. Stanley E. Houston pointed out that unless the pedestrian button has been depressed, no walk light will be included in the regular cycle of traffic lights, permitting traffic to move sooner without delay. The system will do away with the situation of vehicles on all four corners of an intersection stopping for a walk light when no one is walking across the intersection.

25 years ago, 1988
The Lewiston Planning Board approved a 64-lot subdivision of single-family homes off East Avenue on Tuesday after a two-hour confrontation with angry neighbors, whose complaints ranged from drainage problems to accusations that the project would lower property values. The project would be built on 26 acres of land between East Avenue and Montello Street.
