FARMINGTON — A kick-off of the Gold LEAF Senior College-UMF summer term will be held from 3 to 5 p.m. Wednesday, June 26, at the University of Maine at Farmington Olsen Student Center, North Dining Hall, 111 South St. The annual business meeting will begin at 3 p.m., followed by the summer kick off. The event is free and open to the public. Light refreshments will be served.
The kick off is a time to learn more about Gold LEAF (which stands for Lifelong Education At the University of Maine at Farmington), meet the course presenters, socialize with some of the current members, become a member and sign up for classes. The classes and activities are designed for people age 50 or older and their spouses/partners regardless of age, who are interested in lifelong learning opportunities and socializing with people who have similar interests. There are no tests, homework or educational requirements to be a part of Gold LEAF.
The summer term runs from July 3 to Oct. 11 and offers 22 classes and activities. Classroom sessions cover a wide variety of subjects. The popular tai chi class is back, and several hikes and day trips are planned, including a visit to the ocean wind farm research lab at UMO. All of the course offerings are listed at goldleaf.wikispaces.com.
Registrations are open now. Because some classes fill up early, everyone is encouraged to register as soon as possible, rather than waiting until the kick-off event on June 26, although registrations may be done that day from 4 to 5 p.m.
Annual membership dues are $30 for the year beginning July 1. A summer-only membership is available for $15. Course fees vary.
