BUCKFIELD — The town has received a Marshall L. & Ruth-Anne H. Gibson Municipal Charitable Program grant for $10,000 to support children, the elderly and community centers.
Applications for aid shall be for emergencies only: homelessness or the lack of heat, medication, food or other necessities. Those applying must have proof of financial inability to resolve the emergency and failure to qualify for other available community programs and resources.
Also, according to Town Manager Dana Lee, three representatives will come to the board meeting on July 2 to discuss writing a Community Development Block Grant to procure a multi-unit house for the assistance and treatment of young women who are pregnant and homeless. The people represent St. Andre Home, Foundation for Hope and Grace and Not Here Justice in Action Network. The representatives have been asked to make a proposal to the Planning Board and/or the Board of Selectmen.
The Farmers Market in Buckfield didn’t pan out because of parking issues, so the Saturday market has moved to Turner at the old Youly’s Family Restaurant site, now Pomodoros Bistro. The market hours are 10 a.m. until 2 p.m. on Saturdays.
The RSU withdrawal petition passed at the town meeting, so Lee said he drafted a letter to the Commissioner of Education, which the selectmen approved and signed Tuesday night. This is the next step in the process.
Lee announced that the Household Hazardous Waste Day is Saturday, August 10, from 8:30 to 11:30 a.m. at the Norway-Paris Solid Waste facility, 39 Brown St., Norway. Residents may bring paint thinners, Drano, rat poisons — anything hazardous that can’t go into the local transfer stations.
