100 years ago, 1913
Thanks to the effort of Mayor Fowles of Auburn and State Auditor Callahan of Lewiston, these two cities will receive a total of $3,000 for use upon state roads. This sum will come from the automobile licensing fund and will be divided $1,500 to each city. Mayor Fowles of Auburn put in an application some time ago for a share of this money for his city and has been active in the effort to secure the award. In marked contrast to this has been the attitude of Mayor Hines of Lewiston. He made no request and did no urging. But for the watchfulness of State Auditor Callahan, Lewiston’s share would, in all probability, been slight, if any at all.

50 years ago, 1963
For three days next week, passenger trains will be seen rolling through Lewiston and Auburn, bringing youngsters to Maine’s summer camps. Nearly 2,000 boys and girls will be carried by the Maine Central and Boston and Maine railroads in the special passenger movement. About half of the vacation-bound youngsters will leave the Pullman cars at Portland and board buses for camps in the southwestern Maine area. The remainder will ride to Danville Junction, Winthrop, Readfield and Waterville. The Pullman trains originated in Washington, Philadelphia and New York, destined for central Maine.

The Clyde Beatty-Cole Bros. Circus was at Lewiston Fairgrounds this weekend, providing thrills for small folks and nostalgic memories for their elders. Advertisements for the circus at Lewiston Raceway promised a big top with two hours of family fun presented by an cast from 17 nations, all expertly exhibited under a brand-new canvas arena larger than a football field.
