SIDNEY — A 2.6 magnitude earthquake hit Central Maine at about 6:15 a.m. Friday, the U.S Geological Survey is reporting.

The center of the quake, which hit about a mile west of Sidney, was 3.1 miles deep.

A 2.6 magnitude earthquake is considered minor, and property damage is unlikely, according to the U.S. Geological Survey. There are more than 1 million earthquakes under a 3.0 magnitude each year. The USGS says the last earthquake to cause moderate damage in New England was in 1940, when a magnitude 5.6 quake rocked central New Hampshire.
